Abstract To address the challenges posed by limited space and exorbitant costs associated with records’ preservation, the foreign records management system has developed the concept of “intermediate archives.” This facility serves as an intermediary repository for agency records before they are transferred to the central authority responsible for archiving. Different countries have adopted their own terminology for such centers: in the United States, they are referred to asRecords Center,” in Germany as “Zwischenarchive,” in France as “Dépôt de préarchivage,” and in Japan as “Intermediate
Repository.” These centers share a common purpose of providing a relay function for agency records prior to their transfer to the central authority. Existing knowledge on records centers has predominantly focused on English-speaking countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, as well as neighboring Asian countries like China and Japan. However, limited information is available regarding the records centers in European countries. Consequently, this study maims to address this knowledge gap by presenting the current situation and practices of records centers in Germany and France. By doing so, it seeks to facilitate future research endeavors and enhance understanding in this domain.
