Defunct Aerodromes in Taiwan in Archives

Aviation development started in Taiwan since the rule by Japan. A number of aerodromes had been built for military purpose in the late Japanese Occupation period. After World War II, there’re 54 military aerodromes which were taken over from Japanese military by the Republic of China government (Figure 1).

Some of aerodromes, which had been fertile farms before expropriated by the Japanese military, were abandoned after World War II. At the same time, the inflation rate was getting higher, and farmers without farm to work with almost couldn’t afford food to live. Farmers, original landowners, local legislative representatives and administrative officers demanded that the Taiwan Garrison Command should return abandoned airfields to people to cultivate.
Later, the Regulations were legislated and some of abandoned aerodromes, which were still owned by the military, became farms for lease.
