Sweet Memories – Taiwan Sugar Archives Exhibition
In the 17th century, Taiwan began planting sugarcane and processing and exporting sugar. It was one of the island’s most important industries. After World War II, the government of the Republic of China took control of the four major Japanese sugar companies (Dai-Nippon, Taiwan, Meiji, and Ensuiko) and merged them to create Taiwan Sugar Corporation. It was the beginning of many important changes to Taiwan’s sugar industry. This exhibition begins in the period following World War II. It focuses on sugarcane planting, sugar processing, transport, export, local characteristics, and organizational changes to the industry. Content is divided into five main sections:
1. Re-emergence of the Taiwan Sugar Industry
2. From Farm to Factory
3. The Hot Private Brown Sugar Industry
4. A Nationwide Sugar Railways Network
5. Export Markets: From Japan to the World
This exhibition selects 81 items from archives which are on display for the first time. These dated from the 1940s to the 1980s represent how Taiwan’s sugar industry begin with the most difficult period after the war and then progress to the heyday. The archival items on display highlight not only did the industry use exports to earn foreign currency out of technical progress and equipment upgrades, but also became the world’s second largest sugar exporter in 1950s. From the National Archives Administration’s archives related to the sugar industry, visitors will gain an understanding of important turning points in the history of Taiwan’s sugar industry.
